Project: The Craypot

INTRODUCTION

Located in a very exposed, coastal site in Falcon with a brief to feel like Rottnest Island, this landscape was designed to be hardy with a strong sense of place. Inspired by the aesthetic of a craypot with galvanised steel and jarrah features softened with resilient native planting

Fencing made from reclaimed jarrah timbers from a local demolition and repurposed beams from the old patio structure. Gaps below fence allow for the resident bobtail lizard and other wildlife to move between properties.

Feature plants: Carpobrotus virescens, Myoporum broadleaf, Ficinia nodosa, Leucophyta brownii & Olearia axillaris

Limestone is a dominant feature of the Falcon landscape and The Craypot celebrates this natural local material. Showcasing its various forms with feature boulders, spalls, rubble and crushed limestone feels authentic in its coastal context and provides habitat for insects & reptiles. Plant selection was key for this project, as the limey conditions creates an alkaline soil so using native coastal plants that would thrive in this environment was crucial.
